“Are you here to move me somewhere else?” he asked, his gaze going to the scratches he’d made in the dirt. Always moving. Never staying. It must be how he feels. He dragged the stick listlessly, back, forth.

“We’re here to ask you if you’ll come live with us. Permanently.”

His gaze shot up, large eyes meeting hers. “Live with . . . you?” He looked behind her, first to Kat, then to Gavin, and back to her.

She nodded. “With me and Gavin. Kat would like to visit you at our house sometimes too.”

“They have a really nice house, Trevor. I can vouch for it,” Kat said on a smile.

His little forehead dipped, but she swore she saw a light of hope in his eyes, small and distant, flickering, but there. “You . . . want me?”

Her breath released, heart constricting, and she reached out, taking his hand in hers. “Yes, Trevor. We do. We want you. We want you to come live with us. We want to give you a home and be your family if . . . if you want us back. You don’t have to answer now. You can decide. We’ve spent the last few months setting up what we think is a really nice home. You can come see it and decide if you like it there or not, okay?”

He blinked, nodded. “O-okay.”

Tears burned the backs of Sienna’s eyes as she looked over her shoulder at Kat and Gavin. He smiled, stepped forward, and squatted next to her so he was at Trevor’s height. “Thank you, Trevor, for giving us a chance.” He took Sienna’s hand in his, squeezing. “That makes us really happy. We know you’ve lost people. We know it’s been hard. We’ve lost people too.” He cleared his throat but not before Sienna heard the pain. “But we’re hoping . . . well, we’re hoping we can all help each other heal.”

Sienna and Gavin had supported each other through the worst of it, the grief, the funerals, the way the media had pounced on the story filled with murder and sacrifice, trickery and terror. Kat had been a loyal friend and a sounding board for Sienna, and Ingrid had had her back professionally, every step of the way. Only four months later, there was still healing to be done. But Sienna and Gavin were stronger for it, too, each picking up where the other left off, both deciding that it was time to welcome a lost little boy into their home and their hearts. Sienna had a deep feeling Mirabelle would approve.

Trevor nodded, his expression grave. Understanding in a way no little boy’s expression should be. They all stood, and Trevor took Gavin’s hand in his. “I can help,” he said.

“Great,” Gavin answered. “We’re betting on it. And I’m pretty good at that—making winning bets. I’ll tell you about it when we get home, okay?”

Home.

“Okay. Can we go now?”

“Yes,” Sienna said. “Let’s go.” And she took Trevor’s other hand in hers, Kat joining them as they walked across the lawn together.

Sienna didn’t see life as a game, at least not the way Danny had. She didn’t believe they were all pawns to be toyed with. Life could be hard and unfair, but as Mirabelle and Argus had taught her, life held magic, too, and love in the most unexpected of places. She linked her arm with Kat’s, holding on tightly to Trevor’s hand as she shot Gavin a smile. She supposed there wasn’t always an answer when it came to the greater questions of why. Sienna knew one thing for certain, however: that whether you were given one or you had to create your own, there was nothing more important than a really great team.
