.

Except for Reginald, I almost snarl, but I know how much that topic upsets her. I haven’t forgotten about that demon, though.

“He forced me into the life,” I go on. “I never had a choice. It’s all I’ve known. I told him I wanted to go to college…”

“To study what?” she asks.

I laugh humorlessly. “I don’t even know. It was a passing comment. He bounced my head off the sink for that.”

She gasps, wraps her arms around me. She clings on like she’s trying to send love and reassurance through my body in waves.

“I’m so sorry,” she whispers.

“It was a long time ago. When we have kids, I’ll never let anything like that happen to them. I’ll always nurture them, protect them. I’d die before I laid my hands on our children.”

She gasps, staring up at me with her mouth open cutely.

“There’s nothing in this world that could make me hurt them, and if somebody else touched a single hair on their head…”

My voice gets even more volcanic as I think about Reginald and what he did to my woman.

“I may put the gun away in our new life. I’ll find a new vocation, but I’ll always be ready to pick it up again to protect you, Violet, and our family.”

“Luke,” she whispers, her eyes glistening.

It’s only then I realize what I’ve said. I’ve let it all out. My deepest desires. She stares, her eyes wide, like she can’t believe it.

I’m left wondering if I’ve ruined everything.

CHAPTER TWENTY

Violet

I sink my hands into his sides, knowing Dad could walk down the stairs any second and catch us. We’ll have to figure out what to do about him. Now, all I can think about is what Luke just said. Staring down at me with his intense eyes, the savage tightness in his jaws.

“You want us to have kids?” I whisper. “You want us to have a future?”

For a second, I think he’s going to take it back.

He bites down, leans back, bracing me with that reassuring pressure.

“I knew it the second I saw you,” he says after a pause. “When you walked into your dad’s bedroom, standing there in your PJs, looking so hot, so interesting, so fertile… yeah, that’s right, Violet. Those are the thoughts that were going through my head. It was primal. It was instant. I knew it without a single doubt.”

He brings his lips to mine. “You. Are. Mine. I knew it the second I saw you. No other man gets to touch you. Ever. Your body belongs to me. Your womb is mine. Your future. Everything. Everything.”

He suddenly lifts me off my feet, carries me across the room, and places me on the table. We kiss greedily, my hands moving over his arms, across his shoulders, tracing over the muscles, savoring the heat of him.

He said it himself. Primal. That’s how it feels as he grinds his manhood against my groin through the prison of our clothes, rubbing hard, urgently, my lips tickling, my clit pulsing as he does it quicker and quicker.

“You’ll never kiss anybody else,” he growls in my ear after kissing my neck, my cheek, seemingly wherever his lips land. “Nobody else will ever touch your soaked, needy pussy. Say it, Violet, Say it.”

I’m about to, but then an alarm cuts through the safe house. Luke leaps away from me, his eyes darting around.

“Phil!” he yells, marching to the bottom of the stairs, every inch of his body drenched in steaminess, but also power, rage, as his muscles swell in his clothes. “Get Violet to the safe room. Now.”

Dad comes rushing down the stairs. I hear his footsteps, giving me just enough time to slide off the table and adjust my clothes. There’s still lust shivering up and down my panties, still heat expanding in my heart. I didn’t have time to tell Luke I feel the same.

The alarm screeches until Luke takes out his phone and presses a few buttons.

“Come on, Violet.” Dad has his hand on my arm. “We have to go.”

“What about you?” I call after Luke.

He’s already walking toward the door. He pauses, looking over his shoulder at me. His lips are slightly red from our kissing, a patch of redness on his neck, probably from where I clung onto him.

“I’ve got to protect us,” he snaps.

Dad could take the comment to mean me, him, and Luke, but I know the truth. Luke’s words bounce around my mind, tempting me.

He wants us to be together forever. He wants us to have a family. He wants everything I want and need. All of it… the life we long for.

“Keep her safe,” Luke says, staring at Dad. Then Luke leaves us, marching for the door.

I hear a heavy thunk, as if he’s pulling away floorboards. I wonder if he’s got weapons stowed in there.
