I got it clean and working, but it is by no means nice.

No means.

Stepping out of the room, I come to a stop when a shadow moves in front of me. Screaming, I reach for the closest thing I can find: an old broken lamp. Hauling it off the table, I raise it up and bellow, “Who’s here?”

Stepping out from behind a heap of piled up furniture I’m preparing to throw is Colt. The leader of the pack. The biker next door. The man that my aunt held a flame for until the very last breath she took on this earth. I don’t know their story, but I know that she loved this man. I can’t say I don’t see why she was, at the very least, attracted to him. He might be a solid twenty years older than me, but the man is fucking gorgeous.

Long dark hair that is sometimes out and sometimes tied up. Brown eyes as deep as chocolate, a body to die for, lean and muscled, tattoos, olive skin—he is everything you would want in a man, and the fact that he is a bad boy only makes him that much hotter. I have no doubt that lust was a strong part of why she was infatuated with him. If he didn’t drive me crazy, I would probably climb that man like a tree.

But, he has made it clear that he isn’t a fan of mine for whatever reason, so that’ll never happen.

I wouldn’t want it to, anyway.

Dammit, I’m getting off track.

I’m currently standing stark naked in front of him, getting lost in my own thoughts. Placing the lamp back down, I quickly cover my breasts, as if that’ll do anything to hide what he’s already spent the last few seconds admiring. And I say admiring, because he should think himself lucky to lay eyes on such a goddess.

“Can I help you?” I mutter, one arm across my breasts, the other covering my lady bits.

Colt’s eyes drag up slowly from my body, fixing on mine. “Why are you still here?”

Oh. This old chestnut.

Rolling my eyes, I turn and walk back into the room to get my robe. I pull it out of my suitcase, slide it on, and tie it at the waist before making my way back out.

“Haven’t you come up with something else to ask by now?” I mutter, crossing my arms.

“When you answer the question, I’ll find another one.”

He looks fine tonight, with his hair down flowing over his shoulders, those shadowed eyes pinning mine. If he wasn’t such a dick, I would happily be pinned beneath him. Lord knows I’m in desperate need of some serious loving. From a real man, a masculine man, a man that knows how to press all my buttons, a man who isn’t afraid to hurt me just a little. Oh yes, I could use some of that.

“I told you,” I answer, once again shaking the thoughts from my mind. “Chloe asked me to fix it up and sell it. I don’t know why that isn’t sinking in.”

He glares at me. “Because,” he grinds out, “it’s a bucket of shit. Leave it and move on.”

“You really don’t like me being here, do you?”

He grumbles. “I don’t understand why you’re tryin’ to fix somethin’ that was abandoned. If she cared about it so fuckin’ much, she wouldn’t have left it behind.”

“If you cared about her,” I throw back, “you would have kept it maintained.”

“Watch it,” he grinds out.

“Truth hurts. You better accept that I’m going to be here until it’s done. Nobody is asking you to come over and remind me daily that I’m not welcome here. I don’t care what you think, or haven’t you figured that out yet?”

He doesn’t answer me, but his eyes never waver. He looks at me with an expression that, if I were a weaker person, would probably make my entire body tremble and have me retreating into myself out of pure fear. He has that vibe, the kind that tells you he’s not going to take any shit and he is always up for a fight.

Lucky for him, I am too.

“Finish it, and fuckin’ leave.”

His voice is gravelly, and his stance is strong and determined.

I have so many questions about Chloe and Colt’s relationship, their story, about what happened and why she left, but Chloe would never tell me, and I have a feeling Colt will be the same. He doesn’t seem like he’s going to give anything up, so I’ve decided while I’m here I’m going to make it my mission to find out what went down.

“Why are you so desperate to erase anything that so much as resembles her?” I dare ask.

His eyes flash, but his jaw remains firmly tight and closed. He’s not going to answer me.

“Why did she leave this place?” I continue.
