He doesn’t like that statement.

“Either way, you were never mine to touch. I’m the idiot that let myself feel the wrong things. Of course this was all just a big game to you.”

“Are you fuckin’ done?”

“Enough you two.”

Western’s voice penetrates the air, crackling with authority.

“Don’t worry,” I say, stepping back. “We’re done here.”

Turning, I walk out of the front gates and get into my car.

I was going to get some food and go home to enjoy the night.

Now, I’m going to the bar in hopes of taking this empty feeling away.

“I THINK I SHOULD CALL someone for you.”

The bartender, who I keep calling Adam even though his name is apparently Angus, is staring at me with a look of concern in his eyes.

I’ve had too much.

Way too much.

I know this, and yet here I am, demanding another one.

“Come on, Adam. One more.”

“Angus.”

“Please,” I beg. “One more.”

“You give me someone to call, or I’ll call whoever answers the phone. What’s it going to be?”

“You give me someone to call, or I’ll call whoever answers the phone. What’s it going to be?” I mock.

“Right. Give me your phone.”

He snatches my phone off the counter and demands to know my passcode. Laughing, I give it to him, completely unphased by his threats. Instead, I reach for the shot glasses he just washed. Slapping my hand away, he hands me a glass of water as he puts my phone to his ear. Huffing, I turn to the person next to me. A young man, maybe twenty-two or three, and give him a big smile.

“Hi. I’m Myla.”

He grins, clearly finding this entire situation amusing. “Ed.”

“Ed, very sexy. Say Ed, do you want to buy me a drink?”

“Do not buy her a drink,” Angus says, handing me my phone and shoving the glass of water closer.

“Aw, come on Adam.”

“Angus.”

I giggle.

I know his name, it’s just hilarious seeing how grumpy he’s getting.

“Someone is on their way,” he informs me.

“Party pooper.”

I take the water and drink it, my head spinning as I look around the bar.

“Don’t look for anyone else to try and get a drink from,” Angus lectures, but I ignore him.

That’s when I see him walk in the door.

Colt.

Spinning towards Angus, I glower at him. “Colt. You called Colt?”

“First name that came up,” Angus shrugs.

“Ugh,” I mutter, not looking even when I feel him approach me from behind, his big body right near my back.

“Thanks Angus,” Colt’s husky voice tickles my ears. “I got her.”

“Best of luck to you.”

“Come on. Up.”

Colt bossing me around is the last thing I want right now. Swiveling in my stool, I just about tumble off. I am far more drunk than I’d like to admit. Colt catches me before I faceplant the floor. Holding me up, he pulls me through the crowd. I don’t have the energy to fight him, even if I wanted to. He is too strong and I’m too drunk.

The moment we get outside and the cool air hits my face, I groan.

Head spinning, I clench my eyes shut, coming to a stop. Colt allows it, no doubt so I don’t throw up all over him. Stomach turning, I press my lips together, taking deep breaths to try and make it go away. After a few seconds, it passes, just enough for us to keep moving towards his truck which is parked a few blocks down and over the road. We reach the side of the road, getting ready to cross. I take a step out onto the road, assuming it’s clear, when the flash of car lights blinds me.

Clearly a poor decision on my behalf, but it’s hard to see onto the road when there are cars parked everywhere. My body doesn’t react quite how it’s supposed to, and I stare numbly at the lights that, I could swear, turn slightly as if they’re coming right at me. Before I know what’s happening, Colt has his arms around my waist, hauling me back just as the car zooms by. It doesn’t slow down. Not even a touch.

The slow-motion scene suddenly hits and my eyes widen as my hand flies to my mouth. I fight back the vomit and lower myself to my knees, hunched over. Panting, my palms sweating, I take a minute to gather myself. Colt is growling something, and then he’s right there, helping me back up onto my feet once more.

“That fuckin’ car tried to hit you.”

I stare at him, my mind a foggy mess.

“It...it did?”

“Yeah, it fuckin’ did. It zeroed in on you and didn’t even slow down. I got you just in time.”

Heart racing, I stare off in the direction it went.

Was that the person threatening me, or was it just purely an accident? Maybe they didn’t see me or weren’t paying attention. I shouldn’t jump to the worst conclusions. My phone buzzes in my purse and Colt has his hand shoved in it before I can even consider moving. He pulls it out, reading the message, and then barks a curse.
