“Hmm, there’s a thought. I might have Alejandro’s hacker get into his medical records.”

“Gross. Do we really need to know that?” she asked.

“Could help take him down.”

“Reuben, I don’t think we need to get a hacker involved.”

“Maybe not yet. But I’ll do it if we can’t find anything else on this bastard. How did it go?”

“Did you already know I went there tonight? Is that why you called? How? Do you have spies here?”

“Of course I do,” he replied calmly as though it made perfect sense. “How else would I know what goes on in that town?”

Christ.

She couldn’t believe she hadn’t thought of that. Of course he had spies. This was Reuben, and his beloved sister lived here.

“Are they spying on me?”

“No. They’re merely reporting back anything interesting to me.”

“Reuben!”

“Andy, no one is spying on you, okay? I just have a few people in town that let me know when anything I might care about happens and one of them happened to be in Delicious tonight.”

“Yeah, well, I don’t have much to report other than Davidson is a jerk. There was no way he’d ever give me the time of day. I’m not his type. Why didn’t you ask one of your spies to look into ruining this asshole if they’re already here?”

Had he just sent her here to keep her busy?

Urgh, of course he had.

“They feed me information for money, but they’re not loyal to me.”

She sucked in a breath. Reuben valued loyalty above all else. And he only trusted a very few. Being one of those few . . . it was worth everything.

“I need you to take care of this, please. Do I also think you need a break from the city? Yes. Your doctors said a change of pace would be good, right? That’s why I suggested a visit to Wishingbone. My favor should take second place to you resting and getting on top of your health. I need you in my life, Gwen. Nothing can happen to you.”

She sighed. “Why’d you have to go all serious and soppy on me?”

“Because I get the feeling you’re not taking this seriously. Your life is at stake.”

“I think you’re being a touch dramatic.”

“And I think you need a good hard spanking until you take this seriously.”

“I am taking it seriously,” she said. “It’s just . . . it’s hard. My life has changed so much in the last few weeks. I don’t know what to do, Reuben.”

“You do what I tell you to do.”

She huffed out a breath at his bossy arrogance. “Because you know best?”

“Always. Andy, you need to take this time to relax, get some exercise, eat some damn vegetables, and for God’s sake, don’t stress. If you don’t get any shit on this guy, I’ll fake something. All right?”

“Yes. Besides, I’m not stressing about that creep. He’ll make a mistake soon enough, and then, I’ll take him down.”

“Then what are you stressed about?”

“I don’t know how to do this, Reuben.” Any of it. How did she relax?

She wasn’t dumb. She knew what she had to do . . . but she was scared to try.

“What if I do these things and my health gets worse?”

“You will get better,” he said harshly.

She wasn’t offended by his tone. She knew he was only upset because he loved her. “Do I need to move to plan b?”

“Do I want to know what plan b is?”

“Not unless a forced holiday at an island resort with just a doctor, trainer, and chef sounds like your sort of thing.”

She sat up, ignoring the way the room spun slightly. “You wouldn’t.”

“Wouldn’t I?”

“You asshole! Don’t you dare! I will freaking kill you.”

“Better add a babysitter in there. One that’s built like a brick shit house and won’t let you push him around.”

“I don’t push people around.” Hmm. “Unless they deserve it. Reuben, no plan b.”

“Then take care of yourself. Or I’ll do it. Now, eat something, go to sleep, and try to take a walk or something. I have to go.” With that, the call ended.

Urgh, he was so infuriating. She’d throw her phone, but then, he wouldn’t be able to get hold of her and he’d freak.

And he would probably enact plan b.

The bastard. If she didn’t love him so much . . .

She groaned as her hotel room phone started ringing. Crawling her way over there, because she really didn’t have the energy to get onto her feet, she answered the call.

“Hello?”

“Hi, Ms. Anderson. We have a package down here for you.”

“A package?” What the heck would Reuben have sent her? Brochures on secluded islands? Fuck her life.

“Yes, I think it’s dinner. Mr. Brand brought it over for you. Isn’t he just the sweetest?”

“He knows where I’m staying?” she squealed.

Shit. Shit. Shit.

Not good. At all.

Perhaps he really was a damn stalker.

“Um, well, yes. Was it a secret? I’m so sorry. Maybe I shouldn’t have told him you were here. My boss is going to fire me.” The poor receptionist started crying.
