I wasn’t sure if the officer was talking to Copper or Joey, but Copper didn’t move a muscle.
“Other than be a complete asshole to your ex-fiancée, you’ve done nothing wrong here.”
“You just killed my wife.”
“Wife?” Copper looked confused.
“So an eye for an eye,” Joey said. “You killed mine, I kill yours.”
“What are you talking about right now?” Copper looked as confused as he sounded.
“My fiancée!” Joey bellowed. “You ran her over with that tractor! We met online. She’s GamergirlU2. She was my soulmate.”
GamergirlU2 I remembered.
I’d told Joey that he needed to help me with the baby or something around the house, and that Gamergirl would be online when he got back.
He’d told me to go fuck myself when I’d suggested it, and I’d hated the gamer tag ever since I’d first noticed Joey playing with her instead of taking care of our child.
What were the odds that they were one and the same?
“Joey,” an authoritative voice said. “Back away.”
“No shots,” I heard someone else say. “The spark could catch that gas on fire, and the whole thing’ll go up in flames.”
Sirens sounded closer and closer, and I closed my eyes as I rested my head against the mangled metal of the car.
“That was the last thing you’ll take from me,” Joey snarled.
I opened my eyes and my gaze locked with Copper’s.
So many things flashed in our gazes at once.
Love. Dread. Confusion. Love again. Then despair.
We knew what was about to happen.
I was going to be burned alive, and there was not a damn thing he could do about it.
“I liked the sound of her head popping underneath the tire.”
Joey snarled.
“I’m glad that I finally got rid of her,” Copper said, his gaze still on mine. “Only makes it all the sweeter that she was yours.”
Copper didn’t believe that.
He would regret his actions and how she had died later. But for now, he was playing a game.
A very dangerous game.
The enraged howl from Joey made me realize that he’d never felt that kind of emotion about me.
No, this was an obsession bordering on sickness.
The way he was so devoted to her spoke volumes.
“I hope that you finally made yourself right with the world, because once she’s burning, you’ll be next.”
Then there was no more talking.
Copper jolted forward, his big body hitting some part of the car I couldn’t see.
More scuffling from behind, and then more cops filled the space where Copper had once been.
I closed my eyes again and took Joey’s advice and made myself right with the world.
I thanked Him for giving me Holt.
I thanked Him for giving me Copper.
I thanked Him for giving me a few days of married bliss.
I thanked Him for my dad.
More shouting ensued, but I kept praying.
I didn’t stop until a rough hand touched my cheek.
I opened my eyes and gasped when they locked on familiar blue ones.
“Copper.”
“I’m here,” he said. “Joey’s done.”
“Done?” I asked.
“Dead. Not dead. I don’t know. One of those cops clipped him with an asp to the side of his face. If he’s not dead, he’ll be wishing he was,” Copper murmured. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” I promised. “She got out, and I froze, not sure if I should take off. But she had my keys, and there was something in her front pocket that I thought might’ve been a gun, so I stayed put. That armored vehicle pulled up and she got in. Someone else got out and went to stand next to one of those pillars over there. I guess that was Joey.” I shook my head. “When I finally decided to get out, she was driving that thing straight for me. So I jumped in the back and laid down on the floorboard. It drove right over the top of me, smashing both sides. I’m not sure if it was a coincidence that she completely missed me in the back seat, or if she knew exactly what she was doing.” I looked toward the crowd of people now gathering around the vehicle. “Is she dead?”
“Probably,” he admitted. “I didn’t check to see, but something did go pop. I’m hoping it was her head.”
I grimaced. “That’s gross.”
“Did you have any idea that they were together?” he asked.
I was already shaking my head. “I don’t think they were. I’m not sure what he was talking about. I do remember the gamer tag for a girl, but I never heard her mentioned at all. And I think I would’ve remembered a unique name like Reign.”
“Guess Apollo needs to do some digging,” Copper admitted.
“Sir,” I heard replied from somewhere beside me. “Back up and let us see what we can do to get her out.”
Copper did back up, but he stayed where I could see him as the DFD—Dallas Fire Department—cut me out of the vehicle with the jaws of life.
I kept my hands over my ears, but my gaze locked directly on Copper.
