“A woman someone?”
“I don’t ask.” His grip tightened. “Is my woman impressed?”
I turned in his arms. “Very much so. Overwhelmed, if I’m being honest. I’m not used to this level of, ah…”
“…wealth?” he finished for me.
“Yes.”
He leaned against a plush chair. “I know it’s not something you’re used to or even comfortable with, Una, but for today—” he inhaled and gazed at me seriously “—for today, can you let me spoil you? Accept what I want to give you. Just for today. I need that.”
“You need that?”
“Yes. I feel ten feet tall when I give you something you like. I want to feel that the rest of the day.”
“Nothing over the top.”
“As in?”
“Jewelry I’ll never wear. Diamonds. Cars. A hotel of my own. Overly extravagant.”
His eyes glinted. “Anything else?”
I sighed. “What did you have in mind?”
“A little clothes shopping. Maybe a handbag or shoes.” He leaned down and nipped my neck. “Something lacy and silky that only I get to see?”
I looked up at him, smiling. “I’d love to see you in something lacy and silky. What color are you going for? Green to set off your hair?”
He threw back his head in laughter. “Funny girl. That cheek gets me one extravagant thing. Now, let’s go. The car is waiting.”
CHAPTER ELEVEN
UNA
Finn’s idea of doing a little clothes shopping was vastly different from mine. I generally went to a few of my usual stores, headed for the clearance rack, and used my local vintage shop for the dresses I wore when I sang. And those, I rotated as well. I had been saving up everything for my future business.
Finn liked high-end. He never looked at price tags, and once he saw something he liked, he bought it. We wandered down Grafton Street and over to St. Stephen’s Green, and I shopped in stores whose windows I had only ever admired. He laughed quietly when I asked where the clearance area was in the first store we went into.
“Not today, mo chroí. Not today.”
I was grateful he wasn’t pushy and he realized I wouldn’t wear a lot of the extravagant outfits with my lifestyle, but he insisted on a few sweaters and a lovely dress he saw in a window. It was a beautiful shade of blue, reminding me of his eyes, and he had me try it on.
The way his eyes darkened and his hands curled into fists as if trying to stop himself from coming at me when he saw me in it made me blush.
“For when we go out to dinner,” he insisted.
I refused the unreasonably expensive handbag, telling him I was too worried about carrying it on the subway.
“I’ll be mugged, Finn,” I pointed out.
He frowned and chose a lovely wallet instead, which I accepted, too afraid to see the price tag but knowing it was more than probably my entire closet at home.
It was in the lingerie shop he dragged me into that I lost all control of the situation. He spoke with the manager then left, saying he’d return, and I was measured and given pieces of sexy lace and silk to try on. It frightened me that none of the pieces had a price tag, and when I inquired, I was informed that the lingerie was often a gift to the man more than the woman and that this particular man wanted to spoil himself.
When I came out of the dressing room after choosing three sets, Finn was there, admiring a display. It was a diaphanous camisole, the pale pink of the fabric glimmering in the light. The embroidery was incredible, small flowers, leaves, and vines stitched in creams, golds, and red. It closed at the front with a sexy bow that matched the ones on the underwear. It looked sexy on the form, and I imagined on the right person was even more so. The barely there pieces were exquisite and delicate. I had looked at it, but with the way it was showcased, I’d avoided it as I was certain it was one of the most expensive items in the store.
Finn turned to face me, glancing at the small pile on the counter. “That’s it, mo chroí? Really?”
“Yes,” I said firmly.
He held up a silky robe, the soft fabric moving as he swung it in front of me. “I like this. It is the color of your stunning eyes.”
I tried not to roll those eyes but failed as he chuckled and kissed me. “Indulge me.”
I huffed a defeated sigh.
“Next door is my favorite chocolate shop. Why don’t you go ahead and pick some treats for later?” he said, handing the woman his card. “I’ll be along right away.”
I went next door, inhaling the scent of rich chocolate and caramel. As I perused the cases, I was offered a sample, and I bit into the most decadent caramel I had ever eaten. Finn appeared, bending and claiming the last bite, flashing a mischievous smile at me.
