I see her stuff all around one sink and walk over to turn on the water before grabbing the soap. I wash my hands and grab one of the towels, drying them off before walking back to her. I find her sitting on the little bench in front of her bed. Her jacket is tossed onto the bed so she’s in just a tank top, her shoes kicked off and to the side of the bench, while she has one foot tucked under her and the other swinging as she takes a sip of wine. “You think me looking for my parents is a bad idea?” she asks me when she hears me walking back into the room.

“I don’t know what to think,” I answer her honestly. “Sometimes things just happen, and we have to let them. Sort of let sleeping dogs lie or something like that. This might be one of them, just like my mother.” I walk over and sit down next to her on the bench. Her folded touching my upper thigh. “She was married to this guy before my dad.” She looks at me. “He died in a car accident shortly after they were married. Sad story, right?” Her hand goes to my arm, as she nods. “It gets worse, she then found out she wasn’t really married to him. He had a whole-ass separate family and was living a lie with my mother. He literally was living a second life and she had no idea.” She gasps. “It worked out in the end since she met my dad and then had me. You want to hear the weirdest part out of all of that?”

“There is a weirder part than that?” she asks with humor in her voice.

“My uncle Blake”—she waits for it—“he married the wife, my aunt Samantha. They have four kids together, two are from the guy who died, but we don’t mention that, and two are with each other.”

“Shut the fuck up.” She pushes my shoulder, and I laugh.

“Theo is their son,” I say and she gasps out. “Why do you want to find out who your parents are?” I ask her softly.

“I don’t know.” She takes a sip of wine. “I kind of want to know why. Why did they give me away? Why didn’t they want me? Why go out of your way to carry me for nine months and just throw me away?” She looks down at her hands and then back at me, and I see the one tear rolling down her cheek. “Why?”

I pick up my hand and stop the tear from rolling all the way down her face, catching it with my thumb. “I don’t know, baby,” I say softly, “but it’s their fucking loss.” I lean in and kiss her lips. “You are so beautiful, you take my breath away. You are funny, smart, kind, a pain in my ass, snarky, and I know that I hardly know you, but fuck, you might just be fucking perfect.”

She smiles. “You’re just saying that to get into my pants.” She tries to make a joke out of it.

I shake my head. “Are you going to let me into your pants, or are you going to pretend this thing between us isn’t going to happen?”

“It’s just—” she starts to say, and I stop her from talking when I lean in and slide my tongue into her mouth. With the taste of wine on her lips, she leans in and kisses me back. Our tongues dance gently with each other. My other hand comes up to hold her other cheek, and I want to bend her back and lie on top of her.

But with the bottle of wine in her hand, I can’t, so I let her lips go. “I’m going to go before I do something you aren’t ready for.”

I get up, and she looks up at me. “And you’re ready for it?”

“Baby,” I say softly, my hand coming up to trail my fingertips on her cheek, “I was ready the second I laid eyes on you.” I bend to kiss her lips. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Chapter 15

Sierra

“Baby.” The way he says that nickname, a couple of things happen at the same time. One, my knees almost give out, and then the second is the flutter happening in my stomach. His hand comes up, and his fingertips trail my cheek. “I was ready the second I laid eyes on you.” I watch as he bends to kiss my lips. My eyes luckily stay open because it’s so soft I wouldn’t have felt it. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

He turns to walk out of the room, my eyes going to his perfect fucking ass. “Caleb,” I call his name, and he looks over his shoulder. His mouth goes into a smirk as he turns, and my feet are moving before my head can tell them not to. I swing my hips side to side, the courage courtesy of the half a bottle of wine I drank. I get on my tippy-toes, my hand going to his chest and then up into his hair before I press my chest to his. I bite his lower lip right before I slide my tongue into his mouth. One of his hands goes to the side of my neck, the other goes to my ass as he squeezes and pulls me even closer to him. His cock hardens for me, and I raise one leg and cock it over his hip. The hand on my ass now wraps around my waist as he picks me up off my feet. My legs wrap around his waist before he walks back to my bed, and instead of throwing me on the bed like I want him to do, he turns and sits down on the bench I have right in front of the bed. I unwrap my legs from around his waist as my head turns to the other side to deepen the kiss, and I get on my knees, straddling him.
