I hung my head and sighed heavily. The weight of not just the fear I felt over my mother’s illness, but the sudden understanding of what my father was going through at facing a future without her in it.
“Kash …” The worry in Cressida’s voice as her hand touched my cheek comforted me in a way nothing else could since I’d been told about Mom.
I lifted my head again, meeting her concerned gaze. “Mom,” I managed to get her name out without cracking. This wasn’t something I wanted to talk about tonight. I had planned on it just being us. But right now, I needed her in another way. A way I’d never needed or wanted anyone else. “Mom is sick.”
Cressida tensed beneath me. Her eyes widening. “How sick?” she whispered.
“Bad,” I admitted. “I’ll explain it later, but right now, I need you again. You’re the only thing that eases the pain.”
She nodded and leaned up to cover my mouth with hers. “When you’re ready to talk, I’m here. I’ll always be here.” Her words, although soft, sounded fierce.
I buried my face in the crook of her neck and inhaled as the first real tears filled my eyes since I’d been told about my mom’s diagnosis.
I didn’t know what the next year would bring. My mom’s future hung in the balance. But she had given me the one person back that I needed to survive it. Somehow, she had figured out who it was I needed and worked her magic.
There would only ever be two women in my life that were a part of me. The one who had raised me, loved me, and watched over me. And the one who owned my soul.
For now, I had them both, and I would cherish every moment.
