The minute Jared went down from a tire iron, thanks to her brother, she realized all she had to lose. Almost losing him showed her how ridiculous her fears had been.
“You’re my world, Jared. I adore you and I’ll never lose faith in you or us again.”
He pressed his mouth to hers and all was right in her world.
Epilogue 2
Jared sat in the hospital room across from where Charlotte dozed in the bed. His shirt was unbuttoned and his baby girl lay on his bare chest, taking short little breaths. He adjusted the blanket over her back and took in all the good in his life. His daughter, Kylie Gigi Sterling, named after Charlotte’s and Jared’s mothers, with Gigi a more modernized version for Gloria Sterling. It was fitting, and when Charlotte suggested it, his heart filled… when he hadn’t thought there was any more room.
They’d had a small wedding in his parents’ yard because Charlotte wanted to be married before giving birth. Simple and sweet, the gown had draped around her large belly and she hadn’t cared. She’d glowed with happiness as the twins walked down the aisle.
“Hi, Daddy.” Charlotte’s voice drew him out of his musings.
“I’m not sure I’ll ever get used to hearing that.”
Though Daddy Jared had stuck with the twins, especially after they’d gotten married, he loved it. They’d all moved into his larger penthouse and the girls had chosen their own rooms… with new paint colors. But they took turns sleeping in each other’s queen-sized beds. Until they were older, this was what made them feel most secure.
“Sleep well?” he asked Charlotte.
“I was exhausted.” But her smile was wide. “You and our daughter. It looks good on you,” she murmured. He tucked the baby against his chest and rose to his feet.
He quietly made his way to the bed and once Charlotte had gotten into a comfortable position, he handed Kylie over.
Tears filled her eyes as she accepted the tiny bundle. “I never thought I could be this happy.”
Leaning down, he pressed a kiss to her lips. “I love you and it will be my mission in life to keep you feeling this way.”
“I love you too.”
Smiling, he winked at her, then walked over to the bag he’d brought with him and pulled out a box with ROLEX stamped on the top.
She gasped. “What did you do?”
He grinned. “I’ll open it for you so you don’t have to give up the baby.” He took a wooden box out of the paper one and opened it, revealing a yellow gold watch with a diamond bezel setting and diamonds for numbers on a pearl face.
Her eyes opened wide and she stared in awe. “It’s gorgeous,” she said on a breathy whisper. “I’ve never dreamed of something like this.”
“Sweetheart, it’s nothing compared to what you’ve given me.”
She had tears in her eyes, and he had a lump in his throat. Looking at her pale but happy and always beautiful face, he’d never been happier or more content, either.
“Wear it now,” he said, clasping it onto her wrist, “and I’ll bring it home when I leave so you don’t have to worry about it in the hospital. You’re being discharged tomorrow, right?”
She nodded.
“Good. I can’t wait to bring my girls home.” His cell buzzed and he glanced at the screen. “Speaking of girls, the twins are downstairs with my father and Lizzie. Ready for them to meet their sister?”
“I am.”
“And I’m happy to have our family complete.” He kissed her forehead and put away the boxes, then pulled out two pink T-shirts with BIG SISTER monogrammed on the front with silver sparkles. Next came a tiny onesie with BABY SISTER on the front.
“So adorable!” she exclaimed. “You’ve thought of everything. They’re going to love them!”
“And I love them, Charlotte. Never doubt it. I utterly adore you.” And he’d make sure she knew it every day for the rest of their lives.
