She cocks her head.

“I think I remember, but my dad didn’t say much. What happened?”

I grimace.

“Yeah, it’s kind of a sad story, so I’m not surprised Brent didn’t tell you. It was a car accident. It happened in an instant.”

She looks down at her hands.

“I’m so sorry to bring up these sad memories, Gray.”

“Well,” I say, beginning to plate the waffles, “you didn’t know. I’m okay to talk about it, too. Hell, at least it was fast.”

She nods, “I guess so.”

“One thing I learned though is that you can’t put off the things you want to do. If you see something you want, then you have to go for it. You never know when you might get another chance.”

She swallows hard. “That’s true.”

“Whipped cream, sweetheart?” I ask, brandishing the can.

“If you want…”

I grin because now, Harlow definitely has sex on her mind. We had some fun with ice cream, sprinkles and whipped cream about a month ago, and it’s one of my sweetest memories to date.

“Honey, get your mind out of the gutter. Whipped cream for your waffles?”

Her face lights pink again. “Oh. That. Sure.”

I tease her again “Why, what did you think I meant?”

“I don’t know about you, but I was talking about my waffles,” she says innocently. “Why, what did you mean?”

I merely chuckle and lean over to drop a kiss on her nose.

“You’re a very pretty liar, sweetheart. But trust me, I know all your tricks.”

She merely sticks her tongue out at me, and then digs into her breakfast. I watch, satisfied. How did I get so lucky? I have a curvy girl that’s playful, fun, intelligent, and also filthy in bed. I’d love to keep her, but will she be mine?

As we chat over waffles, I realize I’m in so much trouble. I am undeniably falling for Gray Jamison and when it hits me, I feel like I’m drowning under ocean waves. I try to tell myself it’s only a fling, but my heart knows better. This is the real thing.

But I won’t put that onto him. It’s real for me, but I know I’m just a plaything to Gray Jamison. It’s good. It’s fine. Besides, I can’t ever tell him how I feel because he’ll dump me on the spot. If I can keep my feelings to myself, then maybe this torrid fantasy will last a little longer and I’ll have the memories to keep me warm.

As the afternoon grows long, I sigh.

“I really do have to get out of here. As much as I love hanging out, I can’t stay forever. Besides, I think Brent flies in from his latest trip tonight.”

“Sure, honey,” Gray says. “It’ll be good for your dad to get back because Brent’s been gone most of the summer. I never see him in the office.”

I nod.

“Yeah, he’s still busy visiting Kombuchaid factories, which is why I’ve been able to spend so much time here. He’s been home a few times, and those were the weekends when I couldn’t hang out with you. I’d have Jane over to spend the night, and it was just like we were little girls again. Although Jane has been acting weird lately.”

Gray raises an eyebrow at me.

“About us?”

My forehead wrinkles.

“No, not at all. In fact, I think she really supports the idea of you and me. It’s just that whenever my dad was around, she’d giggle and grow red. It’s the weirdest thing. I mean, Jane’s known my dad almost as long as I’ve known you. Now why would she act like that?”

Gray merely smirks, and doesn’t answer. “I’ll walk you out.”

He follows me to his front door and it’s almost dark now. Gray pulls me close and whispers, “See you Monday,” before he kisses me hard. His scruff rubs my face raw and I hope I go home with beard burn. I want a memento of him to take with me, to let me know it wasn’t all just some fever dream.

A few more weeks of sheer pleasure pass, and then one day, I’m sitting at the dinner table with my dad. He picks up his silverware and looks at me.

“How’s the internship going? Are you enjoying your time at Kombuchaid?”

Brent has no idea what a loaded question that is. I blush at the thought of how it’s really going and say, “Fine. How are the company’s factories?”

Brent’s grilled steaks for a nice dinner together. I think my dad’s missed me, and I’ve missed him too. But when he’s in town, Gray and I have to sneak around, which is a big let-down. These days, I need to see my man otherwise I don’t feel complete. But my dad has no idea, of course.

Brent nods and forks another bite of steak into his mouth.

“It’s good. We’re working out some supply-chain issues, but it’s coming along. I’m sorry I haven’t been around much lately. Visiting distributors and factories around the country has eaten up my whole damn summer. I had hoped to be here for your internship, but that’s why I asked Gray to check in on you. We usually divide the workload and I like travelling for business, so I thought he’d be perfect to keep an eye on you since he’s known you for so long. He’s usually a very hands-on manager too, so that’s good.”
