He ran his hand over my skin as he asked, “What am I looking for?”

“A white ink tattoo, which would be easier to spot if I wasn’t so pale.”

After a moment, Wes spotted the six-inch-wide X-wing on my back and teased, “You just won the honor of being the biggest nerd in this relationship. Wow, I really thought I had that in the bag.”

I laughed at that and told him, “There’s more.” I turned to face him and got on my knees so he could take a look at my ribcage.

He ran his palm over my skin and studied the area I’d indicated. A huge smile spread across his face when he spotted my R2-D2 tattoo. I straddled his lap, the movie forgotten. As he ran his hands down my back, I asked, “Did I just shatter your image of me?”

“You expanded it. I already knew you were multifaceted, and this showed me a whole new side of you.”

“Oh, there are definitely many sides. For example, there’s the side that loves to stir things up once in a while. That part of me would love to come out and play tonight, if you’re game.”

“What did you have in mind?”

My grin turned wicked. “Here’s a hint: it involves you and me, a jet ski, your parents’ snooty party, and a pair of lily-white ass cheeks.”

His eyes sparkled with mischief, and he surprised me by saying, “I’m in.”

And that was how I ended up mooning a U.S. senator, several Hollywood A-listers, my boyfriend’s parents and ex-fiancé, and a celebrity chef who happened to be in the butt zone at the time of the incident.

But first, we took precautions so no one would recognize us. He stripped down to his boxers, and both of us put on baseball caps and tied bandanas around our faces like bandits. Then we rolled one of the jet skis into the lagoon and pulled away from shore as quietly as possible, although we were totally out of sight and hearing-range of the party from that vantage point.

Wes had to drive because I was still plastered, and I sat behind him with my arms wrapped around his waist. Before crashing the party, we spent some time puttering around the lagoon, and it was glorious. The night was warm, and the breeze felt great against our skin.

But the best part was the grand finale. Wes zipped past the back of the house where the celebration was still in full swing, then looped around and drove past as slowly as he could. Meanwhile, I knelt on the wide seat with my back to the party, bent over, and dropped my drawers. I even threw in an ass-shaking dance for good measure.

We heard a woman ask, “What is that?” Then someone had the great idea to shine one of the stage’s spotlights out into the water. Booyah! Full moon.

Gasps and exclamations rang out across the party. Once again, it proved to be so easy to rattle rich people.

When we reached the end of the beach, I pulled up my briefs and took a seat. Then we sped off, disappearing into the darkness as we giggled like grade-schoolers.

Wes swung wide, so no one would see us as we returned to the boathouse. Then we quickly loaded the jet ski onto its trailer and rolled it back into the garage. While Wes dried off the sleek, black machine, I hid the hats and other evidence, dried the water path leading from the lagoon, and shut the garage door.

As soon as we finished, we ran into the game room and jumped onto the couch. We paused to listen, in case someone was coming, and then we glanced at each other and totally lost it.

Both of us howled with laughter as we fell into each other’s arms. I couldn’t remember the last time I laughed that hard. I’d never seen Wes like that, either, and I absolutely loved it.

He pulled off his glasses and dabbed at the tears streaming down his face, and when he could finally speak again, he said, “I can’t believe we did that.”

“Me neither. I mean, I can believe I did that, but not you.”

He pulled me onto his lap and told me, “It was strangely cathartic.”

“Really?”

He nodded. “I’ve taken so much crap from my family over the years, and I never pushed back or acted out, until tonight. It was ridiculous and childish and totally out of character, and you know what? It felt great. I’d even call it liberating.”

“That’s even more than I’d hoped for.”

“I almost said no when you suggested it,” he admitted. “I’m so glad I followed your lead.”

“Stick with me, Wes. I’ll never steer you wrong.”

He kissed my forehead, then wrapped me up in his arms and said, “Sticking with you is absolutely the plan.”

Chapter 11

The next morning, we awoke shortly after dawn and slipped back into the house. Then we both changed into swim trunks, and I added a hoodie before accompanying Wes to the pool. While he swam endless laps, I got comfortable on a lounge chair, put in my earbuds, and listened to music. It was soothing to watch him traveling back and forth, his form perfect as his strong body sliced through the water.
