“That had to be hard.”
I smiled. “You’d think so, wouldn’t you? At first, I was terrified they would send me back but the moment I met Drew, I fell in love with him. He wasn’t just my little brother, he was my baby. I would feed him and hold him until he was big enough to push me away. Our family was happy.”
“Losing two sets of parents must have been heartbreaking, I’m sorry Suzie.”
I smiled at his kindness. “Thanks. I miss them every single day but I think they would be proud of me.”
“How could they not be? And your brother—I saw another Wright on the list of doctors, is that him?”
“Yep, Drew’s specialty is cardiothoracic surgery.”
Gavin whistled. “Impressive family.”
I rolled my eyes. “Says the rock star.”
“I just sing and perform, I don’t save lives, Suzie.”
Was that genuine modesty? I hoped not, because the last thing I needed was to find another thing to like about Gavin. “I don’t know about that, I’m pretty sure you saved mine a time or two. Besides, you do more than sing and perform. You’re a wonderful songwriter and lyricist.” I leaned in with a wicked smile. “And an undercover philanthropist.”
Gavin’s widened in surprise. He looked over his left shoulder, and then his right, as if we weren’t alone. “Keep that on the down low, woman.”
I laughed again and it turned into a tired sigh because I couldn’t remember the last time I had such a good date. And this wasn’t a date.
Definitely not a date.
Gavin
“I’m happy to drive you home, Suzie.”
Even though the last thing in the world I wanted to do was take her home right now. We’d had a nice meal, a little too much wine, and my lips itched to taste the mix of lasagna and wine and Suzie. My fingers twitched as I imagined running them through her hair, skip them over her soft skin and mold her curves. But I would, if that was what she wanted.
Suzie’s eyes glittered with amusement almost as if she knew I was full of shit. “Do you often drive while intoxicated, Mr. Ross?”
She had me there. “No. Never, in fact. But I knew you’d say no if I offered to carry you home. Those are your options, or you’re stuck with me until morning.” My skin grew slick with sweat at the idea of Suzie spending the night with me and where that would inevitably lead. Even if it didn’t end with us naked—it would—and writhing, we could get up to a lot of trouble in the next ten hours. “Ryan told me all about the gossip in those town and I’ve already experienced it firsthand.”
She waved off my concern without a thought. “You’re rich and famous, of course the town cares what you’re up to and why you’re here. Luckily for me, no one is all that concerned about anything I do if it’s not hospital business.”
“I doubt that’s true, but they will care if you’re spending the night with me, a world-famous rock star.” She laughed, just as I wanted her to because, dammit, I couldn’t get enough of that sound. Suzie laughed so freely and she did it with her whole body.
“Good point,” she said and her shoulders fell just a little. “Well there’s nothing to be done about it now. I’ll sleep on the sofa rather than risk you getting a DUI.”
“Yeah,” I shook my head. “I don’t think so. I have six spare rooms and a guesthouse, there’s no way in hell I’m letting you sleep on the damn sofa.”
One eyebrow arched and I knew I had made a misstep, but I didn’t know where. “Let me?”
“Hell yeah, let you. Try it and I’ll just wait until you fall asleep and carry you up to one of the rooms. I might even slip you into something a bit more comfortable.”
Challenge darkened her eyes while she stared me down. Suzie was a powerful woman, probably used to getting her way much of the time, which only made this little exchange even more fun. “You wouldn’t.”
I shrugged. “I might.” I wouldn’t.
She rolled her eyes and reached for the melted ice pack at her ankle, picking it up and smacking it on the kitchen table. “You didn’t have to set up booby traps and get too tipsy to drive just to get a few more hours with me.” She was teasing, and I liked it.
“If I was an evil genius, I would have done all that to get you here for a few hours. Since you did all the heavy lifting, I just have to find ways to get you to stay.” Because the more I thought about it, the more I wanted her to stay. I wanted to know all there was to know about Suzie Wright, from her birthday to her favorite dessert and the sounds she made when she was on the brink of orgasm.
