“You wanna be in a relationship with me?” Clint cut him off.

August froze. “I didn’t… I wasn’t… Fuck you,” he added when Clint smirked at him.

“I would never want to come between you and Reese. I wouldn’t want to do anything to hurt him.”

“I know that.” And he did, but… “What if it doesn’t work out? What if we try to be together, or date—if that’s even what we’re saying—and we realize it’s not what we want? Or something goes wrong? I don’t want to lose your friendship, and if Reese knows about us, I don’t want us to hurt him either. He likes you in a way he doesn’t with Zachary. How shitty of a dad would I be to risk shaking up his world again? I bring him here, start a new life, bring you into it, and then something goes wrong and he loses you.”

“Do you really think that would happen? That things would go so wrong that we couldn’t be friends? Or that I would abandon Reese?”

No, he didn’t. But that didn’t make the fear any less real. Sometimes you could know things but also worry you were wrong too. August shook his head.

Clint continued, “I can’t say exactly what this is either. Hell, I’ve never even been serious about someone, but I know that what we just did felt really fucking good, and more because it was with you than it being about an orgasm. I don’t want to jump into anything too fast either. If you want to try it, we can keep going like we are, as friends, but also friends who do sex stuff.” He winked.

“You’re such a child sometimes,” August teased.

“It makes me fun. I’m serious, though. We keep it between us and take it slow. No one has to know, and we go into this trusting each other, ourselves, and being honest. Friendship and Reese come first, and if we realize it’s not what one of us wants, we tell the other and then go back to just being friends again.”

It sounded so easy when he said it, and hell, maybe it should be. They were grown men. They could handle this, and if it lasted, if it became more, they could share it with Reese when the time was right. “I think you should kiss me first. I’d like to sample the goods one more time before I agree to anything.”

Clint gave him the finger. “You’re the one who practically sucked my face off just like you did when we were kids.” But he was leaning in when he spoke, and when their lips met, this time it was August who tasted him first. August who dipped his tongue into Clint’s mouth.

August moved forward, exploring Clint’s mouth as he lay down, taking August with him. They made out on the couch for hours, stopping every now and again to talk or laugh and once to jerk each other off.

August brought the doughnuts over, and they ate and kissed some more, tasting chocolate and apples on each other’s tongues. It was easy and perfect, like they’d been doing this their whole lives, or should have been. August wasn’t a fool. He was getting ahead of himself and making it more than it was. They still had so much to learn about each other again, but he couldn’t deny the easiness of it. How natural it felt to be with Clint this way.

“I used to think about you all the time.” They were squeezed together on the couch still, August half on top of Clint so there was space for them both. “Wondered if you were married and had kids. If you were with men after me. I think for a while I had this fantasy that I was the only guy for you. It made me feel special when I was a kid, and I needed that.” Which was embarrassing as fuck to admit, but again, this was Clint. He could say anything to Clint.

“Well, you woke up my bisexual side, if that helps. I’m glad it was you, and hell, August. You were always special. I knew that from the first day I saw you sneaking through that fence.”

August chuckled. “God, I tried so hard to be this little badass who didn’t need anyone. I hit a growth spurt at sixteen and made up for lost time.”

“Yeah, you did.” Clint ran his hand down August’s shoulder and back before grabbing his ass.

“You’re a dork.”

“You like me this way.” Clint swatted his ass this time. “You want some lunch?”

“Sure.” August stood and held his hand out for Clint, helping him up. “What were you up to when I called?”

“No comment.” Clint headed for the kitchen. He’d said it as if he was almost embarrassed by the question.

“I didn’t interrupt something I shouldn’t have, did I? If I should head out so you can get back to work or whatever, I can—”
