“Bullshit,” she spat out and turned fully in the passenger seat to face me. “The fact that you’re worried about it means you probably already do a lot to avoid the fate you fear the most.”

I groaned. “More college talk?”

“Probably. Maybe even a little poetry,” she offered with a smile as she squeezed her forefinger and thumb together until they were less than an inch apart. “Literature is filled with stories of fathers and sons.”

I grunted again. “Is that so?” Who in the hell is this chick?

“It is, but you’re not ready to hear about it yet, and that’s fine with me.” She flashed another smile and turned to face the road ahead. “Tell me something else, Virgil. Tell me a song you only sing in the car when you’re alone.”

“I think I’d rather talk about my old man,” I told her, drawing another laugh from her.

“Oh, then I know this is gonna be a good one. Come on, tell me!”

I shook my head and laughed, wondering when the last time I enjoyed being with a woman outside the bedroom who wasn’t family.

“You’re a little relentless, you know that?”

“It’s one of my better qualities,” she said sincerely and motioned for me to give her the goods. “Now spill.”

“Or what?”

“Or I’ll make up something even better. Like Taylor Swift…oh, I know! You’re part of the BeyHive right?”

I frowned. “What the hell is a beehive?”

“Not a beehive, a BeyHive as in Beyoncé? Queen B?” She shook her head and let out a long suffering sigh. “Just how old are you?”

I cut her a glare that pulled out another laugh, and I was hooked on the sound. “Old enough.”

She let out a shiver and a nervous laugh before pointing to a normal-looking family home in the middle of the block.

“That’s me. And that’s good to know,” Maisie said and slid carefully from the car while I kept my gaze glued on those fantastic legs, dreaming about a time in the future when I could have them wrapped about my hips as I thrust into her, making her moan my name.

“Thanks for the ride. And the rescue, Virgil.”

“I would say it was my pleasure but that seems like a shitty thing to say.” She laughed again and shook her head, leaning into the window as her hair blew in the early morning breeze.

“I know what you mean. A totally random conversation with a gorgeous stranger in a fancy car. Not a terrible way to finish out my twenty-first birthday. See you around, Virgil.”

I watched the swing of her ass and the sway of her hips as she walked up the stone path that led to a big porch that looked like it wrapped around the whole house. I rolled down the window and called out to her as loud as I could on this residential street in the dead of the night. “Maisie!”

She turned with a smile. “Yeah?”

“Fat Bottom Girls.”

She mouths the word, “Wha–?” Then gave me the stink eye. Wow, if looks could kill. . .

“The song!” I shouted out in a light whisper.

It took her a moment but when understanding dawned, her eyes went wide and she smacked a hand over her mouth to hide her smile.

“You’re so funny,” she whispered, waved, and slipped inside the door.

I stayed until the wind carried the sound of her laugh away. I wore a shit eating grin the whole way home, hoping I had a very good reason to run into Maisie again.

I wanted to see her again. And I would find a way.

CHAPTER SIX

Maisie

“You got home late last night.” Max Ellison. The grumpy old bastard I lived with. Loved him like a father but he was one of my long distance uncles that my brother, Gunnar, knew from his days running with the Reckless Bastards in this area. I looked at him with sleepy eyes, my hair a mess. “You could have called me.”

“I didn’t want to wake you up.”

“Maisie, I worry about you.”

I knew he did, but I was a grown woman and could take care of myself. “I’m fine, Max. I can take care of myself.”

“I know you can, but that doesn’t stop me from worrying about you. You’re like a daughter to me.”

I smiled at him and walked over to give him a hug. “I know, and I love you for it.”

He hugged me tightly before letting me go. He was a big ole’ teddy bear, but he had rules.

And I think I may have broken one—or two.

I’d met him and his wife Jana over my younger years during family reunions and summer barbecues and developed relationships with their boys, Charlie and Jameson.

I ignored Max’s grumpy tone because that was his default state these days. “Sorry I didn’t call. It was late, my battery was almost dead, and I wanted to save it for an emergency.”
