Our third flower person, Bowie, then got bored and climbed a nearby tree too. Because more members of the wedding party up trees is exactly what this situation needed.

“But they have to kiss,” says Hazel for the hundredth time. “It’s what people do at weddings.”

“No!” shouts Sophie. “Nobody wants to see that!”

Bowie points to the north. “Whoa. I think that’s an eagle.”

“Dude, get down here,” says Nash, who went so far as to put on a clean pair of blue jeans and a navy button-down shirt for the occasion. He’s settling into single parenthood surprisingly well. And Bowie is generally more relaxed and happier now, which is great. “Please.”

Bowie sighs, as if he’s very badly done by indeed. But he does start the climb back down.

As opposed to my child, who is busy tearing ribbons out of her hair. “And I am not wearing these.”

“Okay,” I say. Then whisper to my other half, “She chose them.”

Dean just shrugs.

Bowie reaches the ground and Nash takes him and Hazel back to join the party. What a day. Seriously.

It should be noted that no one is actually upset about the delay. Our guests are all happily enjoying an ice-cold beverage. Alcoholic or otherwise, depending on their age and inclination. However, there are those who are sampling a spirit, wine, or beer who are starting to get somewhat rowdy. We knew this was going to be the party of the summer. Roger the lapdog is already asleep underneath a neighboring tree. He has a full stomach due to stealing a cupcake earlier.

I have managed to get Sophie to talk about her feelings a time or two. And I think she’s mostly worried about things changing. Finding rings for us and having a party is fun. But us actually getting officially married might mean things are different at home. She already lost one home and is scared of losing another. Which is why she’s now up a tree in protest over us kissing. I don’t know. Emotions are complicated. We’re just going to have to work our way through these things with love and understanding.

“What if we high-five instead?” I yell back at the child up the tree.

“Seriously?” asks Dean. “You’re giving in to her?”

“Trust me.”

He nods.

“That’s all you’re going to do?” asks Sophie suspiciously.

“We high-five here,” I say. “Then go kiss for five minutes in the pantry at home, where no one can see.”

“Make it ten,” whispers Dean.

“Ten minutes.”

The distinctly hot-and-evil smile he gives me. My panties are gone.

“No one will see?” asks Sophie.

“That’s right,” says Dean. “If that’s what’ll make you feel more comfortable today then we’ll go along with it. Because we love you, and it’s important that everyone in the family has a nice time.”

I shake my head. “We really do need to find a therapist.”

He grunts.

“I’m coming down,” says Sophie.

Hands on hips, he sighs. Then he turns his gaze to me and says, “We getting married today or what?”

“Yes, we are.” I cradle his face in my hands. “Took you a while, but I am finally convinced. You’re prime husband material made just for me.”

The edge of his mouth kicks up in a smile. “Thank fuck for that.”
